Hey, Portland Peoples: Get on the Bus!
Sep. 27th, 2006 06:25 amAs some of you know already, I'm currently volunteering for The Bus Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing voter participation as well as some progressive advocacy. I'm doing some website maintenance and little bits of design work. My current Thing for them is Trick or Vote, or, as I like to think of it, Canvassing in Drag and Getting Away With It. (Once we have the handbill all printed out and official, I'm-a link to it because I HELPED DESIGN IT wheeeeeee.)
They're desperately in need of volunteers--not just for canvassing, but for EVERYTHING. They're overworked and understaffed, but the energy they have is infectious, and compared to some of the horror stories I've heard about other non-profits, these guys actually seem to have their shit together.
Anyway, any of you interested in volunteering with me? Trick or Vote meetings currently run from 7:45 to 9:15 or so every Wednesday, and they often feed you, especially if you volunteer to do some phonebanking before the meeting.
qalephd has already been suckered in stepped up to the plate, and
theotherjay has very kindly said I could give them his e-mail. I'd love to see some more of you there, if you're able and willing.
And you don't have to volunteer for Trick or Vote in particular, of course. The Bus Project has a pretty daunting list of Immediate Volunteer Needs, from cleaning the office to maintaining the servers to software engineering to designing flyers to the ever-unpopular tasks of canvassing and phonebanking--there are plenty of things for you to do.
Also, and somewhat relatedly: I'll have an hour, hour and a half to kill between getting off work today and picking up
qalephd at 7:30 for the Trick or Vote meeting. Anyone want to kick around downtown between 6-ish and 7:30 with me? Get a drink, browse around Powell's, stroll around the Park Blocks and molest the pigeons?
