Music recommendations galore!
Sep. 4th, 2006 09:22 pmI've listened to a buncha new music this weekend, and I have Decided Opinions, and also Really Silly Ways To Describe New Bands as Bastard Children of Two Or More Other Bands. Brace yourselves, kittens.
(For those of you who are really In The Know about music and are scoffing at me for taking so long to discover, say, Komeda or Muse: I know. Look, it's not like I listen to the radio or subscribe to any magazines, OK? I do OK for somebody who lives in a musical bubble. *hangs head in shame*)
Komeda: Mildly wacky. Sweetly melodic. Swedish. If that weren't enough to make you run to the music store or your latest peer-to-peer network to check 'em out, how's this for size: If Stereolab made sweet, sweet love to The Magnetic Fields and had the child raised by a Swedish nanny with hipster sensibilities, Komeda might be the result. Yummy. B+
Muse: Holy crap! A prog-rock band. I like a prog-rock band. And the dude sounds like Thom Yorke. God help me, I like a band that sounds like what would happen if Yes fucked Radiohead. And I'm not talking gentle, tender lovemaking. I'm talking hard, dirty, nasty fizznucking. On second thought, what's not to love? B+
Broadcast: Laidback pop-flavored electronic music, a bit melancholy, kinda like Stereolab, but kinda not really. B
A.C. Newman: Dude's the frontman of The New Pornographers and Zumpano. If that's not enough of an endorsement, here's mine: He's good. He's really, really good. The album, The Slow Wonder, is retro indie-flavored power pop. Dude channels The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Guided by Voices, and he channels them HARD, but he still manages to sound fresh. Also, as
borktron pointed out, he sounds like James Mercer with more testosterone, and I'm a sucker for James Mercer. B+
