Jay warned me a couple of weeks ago that I should expect some sort of a package in the mail. "I take no credit for it," he said, but he's been falsely modest so many times, I seriously doubted it. He was also unable/unwilling to tell me whether it was bigger or smaller than a breadbox.
Curiosity abounded.
Then, yesterday night, when I checked my mailbox: bingo. A medium-sized package wrapped in plain brown paper from somebody in Pennsylvania, about the right size for a very thick trade paperback. Huh.
Ripped open the package before I got to my front door, and bingo: among many other children's books was The Practical Princess and Other Liberating Fairy Tales, one of my favoritest children's books of all time. There may or may not have been happy squealing when I saw that book. Only my cats, my neighbors and any wildlife within a quarter mile radius of my apartment complex can tell.
Those of who who haven't been lucky enough to read The Practical Princess, I can't recommend it highly enough, especially if you're sick of the insipid heroines of traditional fairy tales.
When I talked to Jay last night, he finally spilled the beans: He'd given my address to
ashfae; seems like she took note of my moaning here and got a copy of the book for me.
How cool is Ashley? Really fucking cool.
So, thank you, m'dear. (I only wish you could read this right now instead of after coming back from vacation.) I can't tell you how excited I am to have a copy of this book again. Re-reading about Bedelia and her eminent practicality, as well as the other excellently subversive fairy tales, makes me a very, very happy camper.
