Browsing through the Powell's Calendar today, I found several events of interest--and oddly enough, all of them are taking place next week.

I have never heard of Robert Atkins, but his most recent opus is entitled Censoring Culture; he'll be giving a talk about censorship issues in *cue portentious voice* Today's Modern World, and I'm more than a little interested in checking it out. He'll be at Powell's Books on Hawthorne on Monday, April 17th, 7:30 p.m.

Then just two days later, there's an event intriguingly labeled "Proud to be Liberal." The presentation is allegedly "bold and exciting." As a bold and exciting liberal myself, I'm thinking this might be worth looking at, too. Powell's Books on Burnside, Wednesday, April 19th, 7:30 p.m.

And the day after THAT is a screening of Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom and Pop, an indie documentary about "the growing opposition to big box retail across the U.S. and the often desperate fight being waged by independent retailers to stay alive." Might be worth checking out, even though I'd almost definitely be watching the film while wearing the clothing I've bought from Target or Banana Republic *facepalm*. Powell's Books on Burnside, Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Then while dicking around Powell's on Saturday, I noticed the posters for the Wordstock Festival, taking place the weekend of April 21 to 23 at the Convention Center. It's a Portland bibliophile's wet dream come true. (OK, not really--it doesn't feature Neil Gaiman making out with Alex Garland. OR DOES IT?) I'm still boggling over the huge list of authors who are giving readings, and just about peeing my pants at the thought of the book fair even as my bank account and bookcases squeal in pain at the prospect.

Anyone interested in coming to any of these events with me?
