Hard disk mystery: solved!
Apr. 23rd, 2008 07:18 pmFigured out what was going on with the 23.5 GB of missing space from my 80 GB hard drive on my Thinkpad T60. Apparently, Rescue and Recovery (a utility that comes with the Thinkpad) is a little bitch, and it likes to suck it. And by "it," I mean "unnecessarily huge amounts of hard disk space when backing up files." Ran a rootkit detector program as recommended by
seasong1, which revealed that C:\RRbackups had almost 500 files, each of them approximately 46.9 MB, and none of which could be seen or manipulated using Windows Explorer. Did some digging around on-line, and found the following solution for recovering my space:
1. Start the Rescue and Recovery utility by going to Start > Programs > ThinkVantage > Rescue and Recovery.
2. Click on Advanced on the menu bar.
3. Select Delete Backups.
4. Select and delete those fuckers of mothers.
The latest version of Rescue and Recovery (4.2) apparently fixes the problem with inappropriate disk space allocation. I'm downloading it now, and we'll see how it goes. My occupied hard drive space, in the meanwhile, is now down to a much more reasonable 29.5 GB.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help me figure out this conundrum, and special thanks to
li_kao and
seasong1 for nudging me in the correct direction.
