Two things to do on Friday
Apr. 4th, 2007 11:37 amBehold! At least two Awesome Things are happening this Friday! Take your pick. Or go to both, like I am.
Thing 1: John Vanderslice is playing at the Doug Fir. If you like smart, thoughtful, mostly-indie-and-sort-of-folky music with occasional bleepy keyboard freakouts, then boy oh boy do you have a treat waiting for you. His latest album, Pixel Revolt is good, but not nearly as good as Time Travel is Lonely, Life and Death of an American Four-Tracker (which has a somewhat interesting backstory to it that you can read here) or Cellar Door.
If you want to, hit me up for more samples of his music. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel, The Mountain Goats or The Decemberists, Vanderslice will be right up your alley.
Show starts at 9 p.m. Opening for them is St. Vincent, of whom I've never heard. Those in the audience who have heard of St. Vincent and have Opinions, let's hear it in the comments. I'll nose around for samples tonight and render judgment.
Thing 2: A live performance of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Clinton Street Theater! Brought to you by Enemies and Adversaries. Let's hope the performance isn't nearly as dodgy as their spelling or webpage layout. But when it comes down to it, I'm not sure I care, because HOT DAMN this is an excellent excuse to get decked out in glam rock drag with a bunch of friends. (C'mon,
crab_caution, I know you wanna come with. You, too,
imfallingup.) I have a freakishly short skirt and blue snakeskin shoes that I've been wanting to take on a test run, and this seems like a great opportunity. I just need to get some fishnets, not to mention pink and turquoise eyeshadow, and somebody to help apply the eyeshadow on me...
So yeah. Show starts at midnight. I'm pretty sure I can make it if I go straight to this from Vanderslice. But if we can't make it to this week's show, we have three other chances.
(Many thanks to
tarentel for giving me the heads up about Hedwig.)
E-mail me to co-ordinate. Rides available for the rideless.
