I want to recommend EMI Classics' 7-disc compilation of all of Bach's concertos and orchestral suites. The pieces are apparently not played using authentic instruments, but they are, as [livejournal.com profile] heyokish put it, making my socks roll up and down.

Now I need to hunt down recordings of the same pieces performed on period instruments and see if I can spot the differences.

Ha! Speaking of Freudian slips, I wrote this about an hour ago while chatting with a friend on-line:

[19:39] zehitrer: i've seen [friend], on the average, about once every two to three weeks. (...) i talk to him on IM a bit more frequently than that, but even then, i'd say we have one or two substantial conversations a week--i.e., exchanges involving more than cock.
[19:40] zehitrer: er, cock jokes.
[19:40] zehitrer: hee hee. ah, premature enter key hitting. FUN FOR BOYS AND GIRLS.

No problem--actually, I have a shit-ton of Bach ripped to MP3, including two versions of the unaccompanied cello suites (one by János Starker, the other played on double bass by Edgar Meyer). Would you just like me to burn you MP3 CDs that you can just transfer the files to your computer? They're all gorgeous.

That would be so awesome of you. I used to have tons of classical on tape, but it never made it to CD or mp3

I have some Beethoven coming in from the library as well (cello and piano concertos, mmmmmm) as well as yet another interpretation of the unaccompanied cello suites, this one by Pablo Casals. I also have some decent recordings of other stuff, mostly Tchaikovsky, and also some compilations by Naxos and the like. Hopefully, the next time I see you, I'll have a massive stack o' classical music for you.

I've just realized that I need to listen to more Rachmaninoff and Debussy. Hmmm. More library holds, whee!
