Oh blimey! I've not read those since I was a little heyoka. I've got a very vague memory of them, but I'm pretty sure that my ten (maybe twelve) year old self was a big big big fan.

There are some inside jokes that you won't get unless you've read the Wombles books by Elisabeth Beresford.
I found them very grotesque, but with a certain horrible fascination. They're definitely not for younger children, and on reflection really should not have been in the childrens' section of my library. There are parts which would give adults nightmares.
