Ah, Rummy, we hardly knew ye.

I know crap-all about his replacement, Robert Gates. Anyone care to edumacate me on him?

p.s. I'm really enjoying the different sad pictures of Rumsfeld CNN cycles through as I refresh the front page. There's Gaydenfreude and Hovindfreude--can there also be Rummyfreude?

From Kos:

Brilliant. Bush's penchant for bringing out the most corrupt of retreads of past Republican administrations continues.

Robert M. Gates was the Central Intelligence Agency's deputy director for intelligence (DDI) from 1982 to 1986. He was confirmed as the CIA's deputy director of central intelligence (DDCI) in April of 1986 and became acting director of central intelligence in December of that same year. Owing to his senior status in the CIA, Gates was close to many figures who played significant roles in the Iran/contra affair and was in a position to have known of their activities.

This is who Bush has nominated for Secretary of Defense.

Bush seems to have a regular fetish for appointing people to office who were connected to Iran-Contra: off the top of my head, there was John Negroponte, Elliott Abrams and John Bolton. Though to be fair, a whole bunch of crooks were part of that affair, so the poor darling can hardly pick one out of the talent pool that didn't have something to do with it.

I assume, from the fact that there are lots of conservatives out there, and the fact that there are lots of Democrats who had nothing to do with Clinton's white house, that there are in fact plenty of conservatives who Bush could pick.

Also, you missed John Poindexter, one of the few men to be convicted (later overturned because he gave his testimony to Congress in exchange for immunity), who Bush tapped to run the Total Information Awareness office of the Pentagon. When Congress said you can't do that, his work (and maybe him, I don't know) were transferred to the NSA to become the modern day illegal spying program.

Oh, there are plenty of conservatives whom Bush could pick, that much is true. However, Bush doesn't tend to pick conservatives--especially not fiscal conservatives. He picks crooks.

Interesting tidbit about Poindexter.
