Best Date Ideas
Oct. 9th, 2006 10:21 amRandall Munroe of XKCD has posted the top 20 list of things to do on a date, as decided by the same algorithm behind Best Thing.
Dude. Everything on that list except for the tree-climbing excursion sounds AWESOME, and even that would be awesome for other people to do, just not me. (X-Treme Clumsiness + slight fear of heights = CRASH CRASH SMACK BANG OW HOW'D THAT TWIG END UP IN MY ASS?) And the items aren't even close to being things you can do only with a date. You can do them with friends, too--a posse of friends, in fact.
In short: I think we should go and do some of these things, especially the ones that don't require too much outlay in terms of time and/or capital, like items 2 (chalk arrows leading to chalk), 5 (fort and paper plane fight), 6 (notes in books), 7 (fiction writing), 10 (hide and seek in the park), 11 (sidewalk equations), 13 (random driving), 16 (improvised movie dialogue) and 19 (silent plays in front of security cameras). Are any of you interested? Because seriously, the more, the merrier. I'm also thinking many of the small, simple ones can easily be combined; e.g., 6 + 5 + 16 = A FEW HOURS OF ROCK STAR AWESOMENESS.
(I DON'T KNOW WHY I CAPITALIZE THE RESULTS OF MY EQUATIONS, I JUST DO OK)
Seattle peoples: When I visit, I'm going to cajole you into doing a couple of these with me. This I have decreed.
So so SO! Any interest? Anyone?

Date: 2006-10-09 07:19 pm (UTC)2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16 18 and 19 all sound terribly amusing. I've done several of them.
(I knew I had been in Portland too long when someone blindfolded me and had me do the "pick-directions" game, and I successfully navigated to Powell's.)

Date: 2006-10-09 08:02 pm (UTC)Ashfae suggested I friend you. Lo, I have done so, for you seem most nifty and intriguing.
I would be utterly interested in being in the Friend Posse that did some of these things, if I did not live in the off-centre of Nowhere. Incidentally, 6 is one of the reasons used books rock. Have you ever accidentally gained insight into a poem thanks to someone else’s semi-legible pencil scrawl, or is that just me? Also, pirates! With shopping carts! How I curse that it is too late to make this a part of my Talk Like A Pirate Day celebrations. (Although I suspect my local pet stores will be somewhat disappointing as they could only sell me kittens…kitten-shopping pirates somehow lacks a certain mythic quality that I demand of my Escapades …)

Date: 2006-10-09 08:14 pm (UTC)I have never experienced that moment of insight with a used book, alas, if only because I'm incredibly anal-retentive about my books and if I buy used, I try to buy them as close to new-looking as possible.
Also, do not underestimate the power and ferocity of pirate kittens. They can kick your ass and claw the shit out of your mizzenmast if you piss them off.
